The Gathering of Original Singing "Nevesinje My Glorious" will be held on 08.08.2026 at the Sports Hall "Nevesinjka". The program brings together singing groups, cultural-artistic societies, and gusle players from Herzegovina, the Republic of Srpska, Serbia, and Montenegro, in an evening dedicated to ganga, original song, and folk memory.

As part of the 151st Nevesinje Olympics, on August 8, 2026, at 6:00 PM, in the Sports Hall "Nevesinjka", the Gathering of Original Singing "Nevesinje My Glorious" will be held.
The program brings together singing groups, cultural-artistic societies, and guslar players from Nevesinje, Herzegovina, the Republic of Srpska, Serbia, and Montenegro. It will be an evening dedicated to ganga, original singing, guslar songs, and folk creativity that has been passed down orally for generations — from the older to the younger, from house to house, from village to village.

Song as a Folk Memory

The original song in Herzegovina has never been just an ornament of the festivities. It has been a way to remember life.
Songs were sung about the homeland, family, love, work, faith, heroes, migrations, wars, weddings, suffering, and joy. Every village, every hamlet, and every region had its own melodies, its own words, and its own songs. In them, the names of notable people, memories of events, humorous quips, messages to the young, and pride in the homeland remained.
That is why such gatherings have a much deeper significance than just the performance itself. They preserve a form of folk memory that lives not only in books but in voice.

Why does ganga sound so powerful?

Ganga is a song that is not just listened to as a melody. It is experienced as the voice of the region, family, village, and community. Therefore, to someone who hears it for the first time, it may sound sharp, strong, unusual, or almost raw. But it is precisely in that strength that its uniqueness lies.
Ethnomusicologist Ankica Petrović, who studied ganga as a cultural tradition of the Dinaric area, points out that to an unaccustomed ear, ganga may seem like an unorganized sound, which is why it is sometimes denied understanding as a musical form. However, for the communities that created and transmitted it, ganga is one of the strongest ways to express their own culture and a powerful symbol of identity.
Its artistic strength lies not in refinement, but in immediacy. Ganga does not attempt to be gentle and quiet. It emerges from the voice with full force, as a collective response of people belonging to the same space, the same language, and the same memory.
In a few verses, much can fit: a joke, pride, love, a warning, sadness, homeland, the name of a person, or a memory of an event. That is why ganga is often short, direct, and memorable. Its word is not accidental — it is a message that is passed on.
The Gathering of Original Singing is therefore not just a performance of singing groups. It is an opportunity to hear the sound of identity, the voice of Herzegovina, and the living heritage of the Dinaric area — a heritage that cannot be fully explained in words, but must be experienced.

Gusle, song and decasyllable

Guslars have a special place in the program, as guslar songs and decasyllables preserve one of the oldest forms of folk storytelling. In epic poetry, it was not just about singing — it was about storytelling, remembering, and learning.
Gusle were the people's book before the book. Through them, stories about heroes, suffering, honor, faith, and vows were passed down. When gusle are heard alongside gangu, bećarac, and original polyphonic singing, a more complete picture of folk creativity emerges.

Come and together let us hear the voice of Herzegovina, the Republic of Srpska, Serbia, and Montenegro — a voice that has survived through time and is worth passing on to new generations.

Did you know?
The Serbian Singing Society "Zastava" is considered the precursor of today's cultural-artistic society in Nevesinje. It was founded in 1891. A particularly interesting fact is that the great Herzegovinian poet Aleksa Šantić wrote the anthem "Vrela krvca" for the Nevesinje "Zastava".

After World War II, cultural activities in Nevesinje were renewed and reorganized in 1948, thus continuing the tradition previously carried by singing and sokol societies. Therefore, today's participation of KUD "Nevesinje" and other singing groups at the Gathering of Original Singing is not just a performance, but a continuation of a long cultural story.
